Issue 18

Joan Didion & John Griffin Dunne bought the house in 1971.
Just west of Broad Beach, three miles from Trancas Market.

They lived there for seven years. It had once been
a gambling den. Harrison Ford was their carpenter.

Famous photo of their deck: To the left, the Pacific.
Foreground: her daughter Quintana & Dunne (Quintana’s father).

They look directly at the camera. Didion is behind them,
cigarette in hand, gazing at them. A loving gaze.

She’s wearing a kind of shawl. There’s a drink nearby.
